My teeth are definitely not perfect but one of the things I get complimented on the most is my smile and how white my teeth are.
I stumbled across oil-pulling by accident mid-way through a YouTube video-watching marathon and since I started to incorporate this simple technique into my daily nightly routine my teeth have become noticeably whiter. I have been doing this for quite a while now but I’m pretty sure it takes less than two weeks usually to actually start seeing a difference. This might sound like a long time but this method is about gradual long-term effects rather than immediate short-term effects.
So basically, what I do is I take ½-1 tablespoon of coconut oil (for best results use organic, cold-pressed, raw coconut oil – this is available cheaply from Aldi and in authentic Asian shops) and leave it in my mouth for 15-20 minutes while I remove my make-up/wash my face/do a face mask or whatever I do before I go to bed. You just let the coconut oil melt in your mouth and swish it around like a mouth wash – make sure that the oil is moving around the front of your teeth too otherwise it won’t work as well.
I’m not gonna lie here, at the start I thought this was so gross, maybe that’s because I hadn’t yet acquired a taste for coconut oil but after a doing this a couple of times and seeing the results, the taste doesn’t bother me, in fact I barely notice it anymore. If you really can’t get used to the taste then try using a different oil. Sesame oil and sunflower oil have both been popular in Indian traditional folk remedies but olive oil can also be used. I prefer coconut oil because of its numerous health benefits which extend far beyond just whitening your teeth.
“Oil pulling is a powerful detoxifying Ayurvedic technique” which has been around for centuries. It is well known to improve overall health as well as oral health as “it holds that each section of the tongue is connected to a different organ such as to the kidneys, lungs, heart, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine” (1).
